WHAT KIND OF DEMO DO YOU NEED?
It's easy to think that making a demo is as simple as getting some scripts together, going to a studio, recording, and having the studio put the results together. The truth is, your demo has to be carefully thought through.
First, what kind of voice-over work do you do well? Not what you'd like to do, but what you know you can nail? Stick to samples of that work on your demo.
Second, if you're including work you've been hired to do, choose only those projects that really showcase your talent. That means they should be worth listening to.
Third, if you're recording new material, choose well-written scripts. No sense handicapping yourself with bad material.
Fourth, insist on outstanding production. Choice of music and sound effects is as important as choice of material. You'll be competing with established pro's.
RECENT AUDIO BOOK PROJECTS
From Audible Editors Reviews:
"Narrator James Conlan's earnest performance will remind listeners of a well-traveled and loquacious friend with a thirst for adventure. Conlan imbues Antonson's story of his month-long trek to get a haircut in the elusive African city of Timbuktu with an intrepid spirit." TO TIMBUKTU FOR A HAIRCUT
"James Conlan brings a crisp intensity to the book’s battle sequences and pronounces the many German and French words with pleasing fluency." TERRIBLE VICTORY
Recent projects include fiction and non-fiction - past, present, and future. Click on any title for more information.
Relic Tech: The Crax War Chronicles, by Terry W. Ervin II. In the not-so-distant future Krakista Keesay is a smart, tough security guard with a thing about a much simpler past. He finds himself accused of crimes far beyond his capabilities by a corporate menace with deep pockets. His only option: allow his brain to be hooked up to an experimental device that will prove his innocence. One problem: it will probably destroy his mind.
Linguistics: A Very Short Introduction Three titles in the Very Shot Introduction series from Oxford University Press, on topics we'd like to know more about but didn't have the time.
Best of Rivals: Joe Montana, Steve Young, and the Inside Story Behind the NFL's Greatest Quarterback Controversy, by Adam Lazarus. Everything you wanted to know about why Joe Montana lasted so long with the 49ers, and why Steve Young waited so patiently in the wings.
The Valley, by William Meikle. Imagine "Cowboys in 'Land of the Lost,'" and you'll get some idea of this thriller. A very odd story, enhanced by distinct and memorable characters.
Island Life, by William Meikle. Ancient monsters emerge from an archaeological dig on a remote island in the Hebrides.
To Timbuktu for a Haircut: A Journey through West Africa, by Rick Antonson. A travel writer takes an extended break from travel writing by... travelling. This is a very personal, often very funny account of a man's discovery of the amazing people of West Africa.
